So one of my friends went off today on the Virginia law to allow concealed weapons permit holders to go to a restaurant that serves alcohol with their weapon as long as they don't drink. He smirked as he comment that people only go to bars to drink...therefore it's a stupid law. Right now in Virginia people can open carry in a bar and drink...that seems stupider.
He just doesn't get that there are lots of people carrying guns in bars right now, most of them bad and he has no idea that they are carrying guns.
The main reason this is a good idea is that people, myself included, sometimes want to have lunch or dinner in a place that serves alcohol and not have a drink, but not give up our right to protect ourselves. Some may say that that is what the police are for. Well, I'm not sure who said it, but, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away! We would also rather not leave our firearms in our vehicles while we eat as they could be stolen.
The second amendment is pretty clear...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
I like the story of Gooberville, VA, a small village of 100 people north of Roanoke or in my mind. The town parents (used to be fathers but this is the new millineum and so forth) decided it wasn't safe in town because everyone had guns, so they banned gun ownership in the town. They received 95 guns after the ban. Unfortunately they had not kept good records so they did not know who gave them the guns. They did know that statistically, the town was 95% law abiding citizens, 4 % criminals, and 1% crazy people.
All of a sudden they did not feel any safer, in fact, not as safe as they did before the gun ban.
Even if you don't like guns, let those of us who are responsible and law abiding carry ours because some day you may need us to protect you. The laws you push only apply to us...all the one you want to stop from having guns don't go by those laws. You are helping to create victim disarmament zones where criminals and crazies know to go to. Plenty of examples I won't list them here.
